Le Marche is a region in central Italy which borders Tuscany and Umbria to the west, Romagna and San Marino to the north, Abruzzo and Lazio to the south, and the Adriatic Sea to the east. It is divided into 5 provinces: Pesaro-Urbino, Ancona, Macerata, Fermo, Ascoli Piceno.
The first known inhabitants of Le Marche were the Piceni or Picentes, an Italic tribe closely related to the Latins, Umbrians, Samnites and other neighboring tribes. They are said to have been an offshoot of the Sabines, who were one of the three tribes of Rome. The Sabines themselves are thought by some to have descended from the Umbri, which would make the Piceni a branch of the Umbrians. Others have proposed Ligurian or proto-Villanovan origins. At any rate, the Piceni emerged as a separate tribe by the 9th century BC and later gave their name to the ancient name of this region: Picenium.
In the 4th century BC the northernmost part of Picenium was invaded by the Gauls, more specifically a tribe called the Senones. After 284 BC the Senones were completely annihilated by the Romans, who established the colonies of Firmum (Fermo), Aesis (Jesi), Potentia (Porto Recanati), Pisaurum (Pesaro) and Auximum (Osimo). The extermination of the Senones is attested by the ancient historian Strabo: "After the expulsion of the Boii and the extermination of the Gaesatae and Senones, there are left only the Ligurian tribes and the Roman colonies; but mingled with the Romans are the Umbrian race, and, in some localities, the Etruscans." (Source: Strabo, Geography, Book V, Ch. 1)
The Piceni, initially close allies of Rome, joined the Italic League and revolted against Rome in the Social War (91-88 BC), though some Piceni remained loyal to Rome. Following their defeat, they were rewarded with Roman citizenship and were quickly Romanized, giving rise to numerous Roman gentes: gens Afrania, gens Nasidiena, gens Pasidiena, gens Pilia and gens Saturia.
Picenium became known as Le Marche in the Middle Ages, because it was a march or frontier territory of the Kingdom of Italy (which in the Medieval period encompassed only northern and central Italy). Previously subdivided between the March of Fermo, the March of Camerino and the March of Ancona, the three marches were later merged in the 12th century, giving rise to a geographical-political entity resembling today's Marche region.
