Note: Between the 18th and 20th century many Ladin surnames were forcibly Germanized by the Austrian authorities, while some others had been gradually germanized at an earlier date. As a result many Ladin surnames today have a German or pseudo-German form. I take this opportunity to report here the original Ladin forms of the surnames borne by some of the people in the photos below:

Only 8 of them carry what seem to be surnames of authentic German origin: Hofer, Klotz, Geier, Gschnitzer, Oberhofer, Schenk, Schmalzl. The surnames Prucker, Prugger, Salcher and Trocker are of uncertain origin, but seem to be borne by both Ladins and Germanophones. One of the instructors – Paola Diminic – is from Fiume/Rijeka or from Icici in Istria, Croatia. Finally, one has an Arabic name: Youcef Kasmi. He is probably North African. The remaining instructors (about 125 people) are all Ladins or other Italians.

There is only one known foreigner: Franjo Jardas from Croatia. The surname Unterthurner is of uncertain origin; it is specific to the Burgraviato in Alto Adige; it could be an authentic German surname or an old germanization of a Ladin surname. Note also that the surname Corrocher is Venetian; Fornasier is Venetian-Friulian; Rech is Venetian-Trentine.
